Belle Haven

Alexandria, Virginia

As Belle Haven Country Club approached the 21st century, an ambitious master plan was developed by Pollock Dickerson Associates to update the entire campus. This included major renovations and additions to all facilities and new site work to complement a new 18-hole golf course designed by the world-renowned course architect, Arthur Hills.

A new 64,000-sf clubhouse was designed to echo the elegant Georgian-style plantation homes built a century ago on the shores of the Potomac River. The stone and stucco clubhouse is framed by a presentation lawn and porte cochere, which leads to a grand foyer. The main level was designed to offer a variety of dining options including formal and casual family dining, a new bar and lounge, as well al fresco terrace dining. A beautiful and functional banquet facility was built with a dedicated separate entry, 350 seat grand ballroom, adjoining pre-function areas, and outside terraces that enjoy views of the golf course. A second level Potomac meeting room that showcases the specular river views for special member events was built along with needed administrative areas.

The work also included the design and construction of a new freestanding athletic center totaling approximately 124,000-sf that combined fitness, pool, and tennis facilities. The center was designed in the Georgian manner to mirror the new clubhouse and includes six interior tennis courts, locker rooms, aerobic and spa facilities, tennis and fitness shop, snack bar and kitchen, viewing areas, members lounge, and significant improvements to the existing pools and new exterior tennis courts and viewing areas.

In addition, new stone main entry gates, new vehicular circulation and parking areas, and new lighting and landscaping were designed and built. The new clubhouse and athletic center were integrated with the new golf course and practice areas. This integration included the additions of new golf cart storage and staging area, new cart paths, practice putting greens, practice range, and golf maintenance facilities.
